Is an in home studio right for you?

While I often recommend studio newborn sessions, there are definitely times when an in-home session is the perfect fit for a family. Every home, every baby, and every season of life is different. For some parents, there’s something especially meaningful and comforting about photographing your newborn in the space where these first memories are being made.

One of the biggest benefits of an in-home session is the comfort and convenience it offers. There’s no need to pack up the diaper bag, load the car, or rush out the door with a brand-new baby. Everything you need is already within reach. Your baby stays in a familiar environment, and parents often feel much more relaxed being in their own home with easy access to feeding supplies, extra outfits, snacks, and all the little comforts that make those early newborn days easier.

In-home newborn sessions can be especially wonderful for families with toddlers. Younger children are often much more comfortable in their own environment, surrounded by familiar toys, routines, and spaces. Being at home can help siblings feel relaxed and settled, which often leads to more natural interactions and less stress during photos. Instead of adjusting to a new place, toddlers can ease into the session at their own pace.

These sessions also tend to have a softer, more relaxed feel overall. Rather than focusing on elaborate props or multiple backdrop setups, in-home sessions are typically simpler and more lifestyle-driven in style. We focus on connection, cuddles, and the little in-between moments that naturally unfold. With minimal setups and gentle posing, the final images feel warm, authentic, and deeply personal to your family.

Another beautiful advantage of an in-home session is the opportunity to include lifestyle images that reflect your family’s story. Your nursery, bedroom, living room, and everyday spaces become part of the memories we capture. These images often feel deeply personal and meaningful over time, preserving what your home looked like during those fleeting newborn days.

In-home sessions also allow pets to be part of your photos. For many families, pets are an important part of the family unit, and photographing them at home makes inclusion easier and more natural, without the stress of transporting them elsewhere.

To ensure the best experience and results, a bit of preparation is important. Ideally, a space of about 10x10 feet works best for setting up safely and comfortably. Choosing a room that can be closed off is also important so the heat can be turned up high enough to keep your baby warm and settled throughout the session. This helps create an environment where your newborn can relax and sleep, allowing us to move through the session smoothly.

An in-home newborn session isn’t about perfection or elaborate setups. It’s about comfort, familiarity, and telling your family’s story exactly as it is in this moment. For parents who value a relaxed pace, meaningful surroundings, and a more documentary feel, an in-home session can be a beautiful fit.
