In-Home Photography or Studio Photography? Is a Home Session Right for You?

Choosing between an in-home session and a studio session is a personal decision, and both options offer beautiful results. While my studio in Cloverdale is designed to be calm, cozy, and fully equipped, there are some wonderful reasons why an in-home session might be the perfect fit for your family.

If you’re considering staying home for your session, here’s what that experience can look like.

Why Choose an In-Home Photography Session?

1. You Don’t Have to Leave Home During a Vulnerable Time

The postpartum period is a tender and exhausting time. You are healing, adjusting, and often running on very little sleep. Whether you’ve had a C-section or a vaginal delivery, your body needs rest and care.

An in-home session allows you to stay in your own space where you feel most comfortable. There’s no packing, no rushing, and no pressure to be anywhere on time. Everything happens at your pace, right where you already are.

2. Older Siblings Feel More Comfortable

For families with toddlers or young children, being at home can make a big difference. Your older children are in their familiar environment, surrounded by their own toys and routines.

They can take breaks, play, and ease into the session naturally. This often leads to more relaxed, genuine smiles and a smoother overall experience. Kids tend to warm up faster when they feel safe and comfortable.

3. Your Pets Can Be Included

One of the biggest advantages of an in-home session is that your pets can be part of your photos.

My studio is a pet-free space, but at home, your furry family members are welcome to join in. Whether it’s a dog snuggling up beside baby or a curious cat peeking into the frame, these moments can be incredibly meaningful.

4. Meaningful Lifestyle Images in Your Own Space

In-home sessions naturally lend themselves to lifestyle photography. These are the images that capture your real life, your real connection, and your real environment.

Photos taken in your nursery, your bedroom, or your living room carry a deeper emotional value. Years from now, you’ll look back and remember not just how your baby looked, but what your home felt like during those early days.

Things to Consider for an In-Home Session

While in-home sessions are beautiful and meaningful, there are a few things to keep in mind to help everything run smoothly.

You’ll Need to Clear Some Space

To create a clean and functional shooting area, you’ll need to make space for your session.

Ideally, this means:

  • A cleared floor space of about 10 x 10 feet
  • Minimal clutter in the area
  • Good natural light if possible

This gives me enough room to safely set up and move around while photographing your baby and family.

A Warm Room is Essential

Newborn sessions require a warm environment so your baby stays sleepy and comfortable.

If possible, choose a room where:

  • The heat can be controlled separately
  • The temperature can be turned up nice and warm

A cozy space helps keep baby calm and makes posing much easier.

Limited Props and Equipment

When I travel to your home, I bring a carefully selected setup, but I won’t have access to my full studio collection.

What I can bring:

  • A travel-sized beanbag
  • A small selection of wraps and props
  • Simple flooring or boards

What to expect:

  • Fewer backdrop options
  • A more minimal, natural look

That said, I can still create a full and beautiful gallery for you that is very close to what you would receive in the studio. The biggest difference is simply the variety of setups available.

Final Thoughts

In-home photography sessions are perfect for families who value comfort, connection, and meaningful storytelling. They allow you to stay in your safe space, include all members of your family (pets included), and capture memories that feel deeply personal.

If you’re looking for a relaxed, lifestyle-focused experience, an in-home session might be exactly what you’re looking for.

If you prefer more variety, access to props, and a fully controlled environment, the studio may be the better fit.

Either way, the goal is always the same, to create beautiful, timeless images that you will treasure for years to come.
