Including Parents' Hands in Your Newborn Photos
By Elizabeth Lang Photography
As a photographer, one of my favourite ways to capture the connection between parents and their newborn is by focusing on hands. Hands are such a powerful symbol of love, protection, and care—especially when it comes to your precious little one. Whether it’s mom’s hands gently cradling baby’s tiny body, dad’s strong hands supporting your baby’s delicate head, or a sibling’s hands lovingly placed on their new brother or sister, hands help tell the beautiful, emotional story of your family’s bond.
I find that incorporating parents' hands in newborn photos creates such intimate, meaningful moments. It's a way to showcase not just the baby but the love and care surrounding them. Moms, dads, and siblings all have a unique way of showing affection through touch, and capturing these moments creates timeless images that reflect the deep connection your family shares.
For example, one of my favourite shots is capturing a close-up of mom’s hands gently holding her newborn’s tiny body. The contrast of her hands—so much bigger than her baby’s—creates a beautiful visual of how protective and tender a mother’s touch is. These types of photos highlight the scale of just how tiny your newborn is, while also emphasizing the warmth and care that mom provides.
Dad’s hands are equally important in these photos. Whether he’s cradling your baby’s head or gently holding their little feet, dad’s hands represent strength, security, and support. I love photographing these subtle moments, as they show the softer, more protective side of fathers. These images tell a story of a father’s love for his child, holding them with a mix of strength and tenderness.
Siblings' hands can also add such a sweet and meaningful touch to your newborn session. Older brothers and sisters love to place their hands on the baby, whether it’s resting on their little feet or giving them a gentle kiss on the hand. These shots show the first moments of the sibling bond—full of curiosity, excitement, and love. It's amazing to see how these tiny hands can bring so much warmth and personality into the photos, capturing the unique dynamic of your family as it grows.
One of the most precious moments I love capturing is the interaction between baby and parent—whether it's dad holding baby’s tiny hands, mom cradling baby’s feet, or even the baby’s hand gently wrapped around a parent's finger. These close-up shots of hands and baby details are so intimate and personal. They show not just the baby's innocence but also the deep connection between parent and child. The tender way a parent holds their baby’s hand or touches their tiny feet speaks volumes about the love and protection they feel for their little one.
Hands have an extraordinary ability to convey emotion and tell a story, which is why I love including them in newborn sessions. They are such a natural part of the connection between family members and babies. They hold, protect, and soothe, and those little details can turn an already beautiful moment into something even more meaningful.
